2-day course: 5 hours of flying and 3 hours of ground $2500

2023 Bush Courses in Piper PA-18 with 35” Bushwheels or EDO 2000 Floats

(The airman can elect to do this entire course on either wheels, floats, or a combination of both)

20% deposit at least one month prior to start date

8 Hours of flight instruction in PA-18

4 Hours of ground instruction

The daily schedule may be modified for two reasons

  • Depending on proficiency or if the airman needs a 61.31 (i) tailwheel endorsement
  • To best serve the desires of bushwheels or floats

Day 1 Tailwheel Familiarization

  • Approach procedures and setup
  • VFR FAF
  • Aimpoint/Abort point
  • Escape Path
  • Wind Analysis
  • Traffic Patterns
  • Relationship between CG and approach speed/stall speed

Day 2 Review Previous Day

  • Setting limits/personal minimums
  • Landing Zone analysis (obstacles, landing surface, uneven)
  • Lighting
  • Flight coordination
  • Procedures/distractions in the cockpit
  • Off Airport Illusions
  • Making Plan of Action
  • Canyon Flying
  • Vx and Vy relation to best glide and lost engine
  • Hazards in the pattern
  • Altimeter setting off airport

    This course does not include 61.31 (i) tailwheel endorsement or a ASES rating

    5-day course: 12 hours of flying and 6 hours of ground $5700.00

    Day 3. Putting Knowledge to Use

    • Coordination of Flight (slips and skids)
    • Canyon Flying – Up vs Down, Turning, Radius, Speed, Mountain Pass and Ridge crossings
    • Procedures/distractions in the cockpit

     

    Day 4. Mountain Day

    • Glideslope to landing zone (flat, steep, uphill, downhill, flare to landing)
    • Illusions (Cut bank, curved landing, rough field, color and texture, obstacles, no-go)

     

    Day 5. Practice Skills Learned

    • Practice and incorporate skills
    • Rivers, sand bars, mountains
    • Evaluate decision making, transfer of learning

    Note:  This 5-Day Bush Course does not include training outlined in the ACS for a ASES add-on rating, nor does it include the ASES checkride.
